Soccer and 2nd Skull
Mar. 5, 2018 /Stell/A Grande Life/ — I was watching my almost 10 year old play soccer last weekend and thinking about how much he’s changed since he first started playing way back when he was 4. I found his very first soccer jersey, which was huge on him at the time.
He’s now in his 12th season of playing soccer and the game has changed from looking at adorable tiny kids who often forgot there was even a game going on to kids with feet bigger than mine who are ultra-competitive about the score.
I’ve learned quite a bit along the way about soccer gear and what to cheer for during a game.
Even some of the rules of the game have changed. His age group and younger are not permitted to head the soccer ball. Heading the ball results in a foul – an indirect free kick will be given to the opposing team.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that the kids don’t sometimes get hit in the head by the soccer ball- they just aren’t intentionally going after the ball with their heads. And because they’re playing aggressively, they can knock heads or get knocked to the ground or smack into a goal post.
When I think about it too much, I want to wrap my child in bubble wrap or have him not play sports at all. But neither is very practical and both would really upset my son.
But there is something my son can wear out on the field that could help protect him. 2nd Skull helps protect an athlete by providing a thin layer of material designed to absorb impact. In all the seasons my son has been playing soccer, there hasn’t been much change in the gear he’s needed, but this is a great recent addition.
2nd Skull is the manufacturer of a patented protective skull cap that fits under helmets to improve safety and mitigate the impact of blows to the head. This cap is good for helmet sports like hockey, football, biking, skateboarding, etc. The 2nd Skull Cap Fits comfortably under any sports helmet without the need for upsizing. For non-helmet sports such as soccer, volleyball, and basketball, there’s the 2nd Skull Band, which is what my son tried.
He liked that it was comfortable and didn’t get in his way as he was playing. He also liked the sporty look of the 2nd Skull Band, though he did say it would have been okay if I’d ordered him the pink one instead of the black one. The band is moisture-wicking, soft and breathable. And it’s washable, something I find important in any sports gear.
Manufactured in the U.S., the skull cap is a compressive, antimicrobial cap with an extra thin layer of XRD® Technology, an extreme energy absorbing material. This material is made with special urethane molecules that are soft and flexible at rest and then momentarily harden under sudden pressure. 2nd Skull has conducted biomechanical testing at independent labs in North America and the United Kingdom that has shown the skull cap reduces both rotational and linear impact when worn under football and other athletic helmets.
2nd Skull products are engineered for impact and designed for comfort. Both the band and cap have been extensively tested, and you can review testing data specific to your sport when you visit their website. 2nd Skull is the Winner of the NFL HeadHealth TECH II Challenge and was named to the Sports Tech Awards shortlist as one of the Most Innovative Sports Equipment or Apparel products. You can also see which of their products is right for the sports your child plays by visiting the 2nd Skull products page. You can order directly from them as well.
Note: Scientists have not reached agreement on how the results of impact absorption tests relate to neck, head, or brain injuries, including concussions. No conclusions about a reduction of risk or severity of neck, head, or brain injuries, including concussions, should be drawn from impact absorption tests.
